God of War Ragnarok, developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles, is the eighth installment in the God of War series and the sequel to 2018’s God of War. The game is set in the world of Norse mythology and follows Kratos and his son Atreus on their epic and emotionally charged journey to fulfill a promise to the gods and each other.
When we first started playing Ragnarok, we were still riding the lightning of 2018’s God of War as new converts to the franchise. God of War alone is reason enough to own a Playstation 5 and should not be glanced over if you enjoy story-charged gameplay. If you are a father, no other game so adeptly broaches the nuances of a father/son relationship as God of War. Legacy, loyalty, obedience, individuality, protection, and so many other ideas are masterfully explored between two characters who are as relatable as they are epic. The voice acting is superb, unmatched by any other game we’ve ever played. The agency this game provides will have you truly feeling the emotions the characters are depicting. Santa Monica Studio achieves a truly inspiring level of empathy, pushing the art form of video games to new heights. At one point in this game, you will truly feel anger and disappointment toward of friend you care deeply for. You’re better than that Mímir!
God of War Ragnarok features the same hack-and-slash combat system as the previous games in the series, with players taking control of Kratos as they battle their way through hordes of enemies. The game also features new combat mechanics, such as the ability to parry enemy attacks and use the environment to their advantage. Along with combat, players will explore the world, uncover secrets, and solve puzzles. This game has a knack for helping you forget about time and move on to the next area without conscious thought. I can’t tell you the number of times I told myself “OK, after this (fight/puzzle/story beat) I’ll be done….”. And two hours later my wife is yelling at me to come to bed and pay attention to her.
The game includes an expansive, cinema-quality story-driven single-player campaign that will take players through the Nine Realms of Norse mythology. If you had your mythological itch scratched in God of War 2018, this game will give you a full body massage in the realms of the Norse gods. You will learn about characters like Thor, Odin, the Valkyries, a multi-personality-wielding squirrel god by the name of Ratatoskr, weapons of legend, and mythological creatures you’ve read about and seen in countless pop culture references. No other game has motivated us to learn about mythology from another culture as God of War: Ragnarok.
God of War: Ragnarok is an exciting and thrilling game that is sure to please fans of the series. Fans of the series can look forward to an action-packed adventure that features the brutal combat of the series, an expansive world to explore, and plenty of secrets to uncover.
