You’re a Wizard…

If you are like this group of millennials, the Harry Potter books were as much a part of your childhood as Legos and TRL. Yet somehow, in all this time, we haven’t visited that magical castle in a game that puts as much care and magic into the world as the books. That ends with the 2023 release of Hogwarts Legacy.

Hogwarts Legacy is a fantastic glimpse into one of the most imaginative fictional worlds of our time. While it offers a unique and magical gaming experience, Hogwarts Legacy is not immune from many of the open world tropes that fill a game of this size. There are enough mundane tasks to complete in this game to drive Mr. Filch batty.

As a rare 5th year entry student, you will explore an expansive world filled with interesting characters, magical creatures, and rich history. You will truly feel as if you are getting a glimpse into a historical time long past, full of magic and mystery. The game provides an opportunity to experience the iconic world of Hogwarts and its many secrets while providing just enough original content to keep fans of the Potter series glued.

There are three main components to the game: exploration, combat, and spellcasting. Exploration is a big part of the game, as Hogwarts and its surrounding areas are filled with secrets and treasures to discover. You can also explore the various magical creatures and locations around the world, such as Hagrid’s future hut, the Forbidden Forest, and the Black Lake. While the storyline doesn’t hold a candle to seven books worth of character development, plot lines, and story, it does a decent job endearing you to your fellow classmates, teachers, and enemies.

Portkey Games caught the golden snitch when it comes to their decision to base this game in a time period well removed from the storyline we all know. The freedom to move about within the universe without being strictly limited to a story already told allows the game to stand independently unique.

Combat is also an important aspect of the game and another pleasant surprise. If you were like us and worried the spellcasting system would fall somewhere into the category of lackluster like so many other open world games, take heart young wizard! Hogwarts Legacy truly captures the lore of being a wand wielding dynamo while also making the combat fun and full of variety. Be prepared for a slight learning curve when it comes to the controls, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be leviosa-ing Dark wizards like a seasoned Auror in no time! Learn the rock-paper-scissors aspect of casting the right type of spell at the matching enemy shield type and you’ll quickly advance to a level a spell combo awesomeness to rival even You Know Who himself.

Upgrading you character to learn new spells is your main drive in this game and smartly requires you to complete more than just the main story if you want to unlock it all. You can battle a small collection of creatures, wizards, and witches with your magical wand and spells. In fact, our main critique for this game is that there are not enough enemy types. With such a detailed world and large variety of quests, it’s surprising that you only ever end up facing off against the same few enemy types throughout the game. The combat system makes up for that but we can only imagine the potential here with all the creatures featured in the books and movies.

Spellcasting is a fun and essential part of the game. You can learn various spells and use them to help you in battles and exploration. There are also various puzzles and challenges that require you to use your magical skills. Want to sneak in to the restricted section of the library and learn the secrets of the ancient magic of old? Better unlock the spell that makes you invisible (sorry, no invisibility cloak for you).

Hogwarts Legacy is a massive success in our minds as living proof that the fantasy and mystery of a beloved book series can be reflected in the medium of video games. Portkey Games has poured a caring and respect into this games that fans deserve.

Overall, Hogwarts Legacy is a great game that offers a unique and magical experience. The beautiful graphics, complex combat system, and interesting characters make it an excellent match for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the world of Harry Potter.
